Apartment for vacation rental in Santa Croce neighborhood Florence Italy .
Apartment with one bedroom, one bathroom . 2/4 sleeping accommodations
Profile
The apartment lies in the Ciompi square, in the heart of the Santa Croce neighborhood. In 1955 the Comune of Florence had it rebuilt in Piazza dei Ciompi on via Pietrapiana. Originally, it was located in what is nowaday called Piazza della Repubblica after the demolition of the Jewish Ghetto and the Mercato Vecchio. It was designed and built by Giorgio Vasari to substitute for the original old fish market that was located on the Ponte Vecchio until 1565, when the construction of Vasari`s corridor began. The structure, simple and linear, is made up of eighteen Doric columns. It is decorated with terracotta reliefs that depict different species of fish. Borgo Allegri links Piazza dei Ciompi to Santa Croce Church. Here in the square stand the antigue archs of Loggia del Pesce, and the Flea Market. The workshop of the famous painter Cimabue, born in Florence around 1240, is also to be found on this street. It is his presence that gives this street its name. Other talents set up their workshop on this street such as, painter Rosellino and sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti.
