The blue-back team has just celebrated its centenary. Some students, in fact, founded the main Pisan football team in 1909, and used the lawn in the shadow of the Leaning Tower as a rudimentary football pitch.

The team played its first official match against a team from Livorno (still today, a fierce and heartfelt rivalry characterises the relationships between the towns).

The first successes date back to the period between 1914 and 1921, when the Pisan football team won the championship of Central-Southern Italy and played against the Pro Vercelli for the national championship. Unfortunately, the Piedmontese team won by 2-1.

The Pisan team has been seven times in the Serie A. In the 1982-1983 season, it conquered 27 points, and ranked eleventh, which represents its best position.

Nowadays, the team attracts an incredibly high number of supporters to the Romeo Anconetani Stadium - Arena Garibaldi, which stands in the area called Porta a Lucca surrounded by the two-or-three-storey buildings and the villas of this corner of Pisa.
