On a hill about 200 meter high stands the Tower of Donoratico, what remains of the famous Castle of Donoratico. During the battles between the family Della Gherardesca and Florence, the castle was destroyed. With medieval origins, the castle was surrounded by two lines of walls but after the destruction of 1433 remained only part of the exterior walls and the tower that is still visible today. In the twentieth century Walfredo Gherardesca did restructure part of the tower. The town has Etruscan origins and if you continue going uphill where there is the Tower of Donoratico, you can find the remains of some Etruscan tombs and a necropolis.
Donoratico is also famous for the quality of its food and wines. Along the scenic Wine Road of the Etruscan Coast you will find numerous wineries open to the public for wine tasting with world-famous wines such as Doc Bolgheri, Sassicaia and Ornellaia. And even if you do not like wine, the road offers breathtaking scenery: on one side hills and woods and on the other the blue Tuscan sea.
