Castle Malaspina

Situated in the municipality of Fosdinovo, in 1124 the castle Malaspina was governed by the nobles of Erberia on the behalf of the bishop of Luni. In the course of the 13th century the ascent of the Malaspina family brought the domination of the bishop of Luni over the entire territory to an end.

At the beginning of the 14th century the marquesses Malaspina, supported by Henry VII and the Scaligeri, transferred the seat of the march from Fivizzano to Fosdinovo, in the castle bearing their name. After a brief period during which Castruccio Castracani owned the castle, the Malaspina definitively re-acquired it in 1334.

The marquisses commissioned then important enlargement and renovation works. Numerous turret masts and defensive bulwarks were added, whereas the building was transformed into an elegant aristocratic residence.

Considered indestructible, the castle has survived almost without damage the earthquake that in 1922 hit the Lunigiana region.

In one of the rooms in castle there is the so-called "pozzo della dimenticanza" (oblivion pit). It is said that Marchioness Cristina Adelaide Pallavicino, who was Ippolito Malaspina`s wife, threw her lovers in this trap full of blades after having satisfied her sexual appetite. Actually, the Malaspina possibly used the pit to eliminate their enemies.
