Pietrasanta Tours

At the Discovery of Pietrasanta Historical Centre

Pietrasanta the old "Medici Capitanato" capital of Versilia founded in 1255 by Guiscardo da Pietrasanta Podestà from Lucca, is today the most important historical centre in the area. Its monuments and artisan activities with marble make it a valid place to visit. To reach Pietrasanta follow the cycling path along the wonderful Viale Apua which connects Marina di Pietrasanta to Pietrasanta town.

Pietrasanta
From Forte dei Marmi go along Via XX Settembre, until the motorway flyover then turn right along Via degli Olmi which reaches the Viale Apua cycling path. From Marina di Pietrasanta take Via Catalani or any other of the many little parallel streets to reach the cycling path.

Just before the end of Viale Apua (approx. 200 mt) turn left into Via Monginevro then turn right immediately into Via del Crocialetto, which goes into the town centre crossing the "Via Aurelia".

Once in Via Oberdan turn right and walk down Via Mazzini (have a look at the shopping area and at the birthplace of Padre Eugenio Barsanti) to reach "Piazza Duomo". In the square admire the Duomo di San Martino (XIV century), the Church of Sant`Agostino (XIV century), the Historical Archives (the Moroni Palace opens from 8.00 to 14.00) and the former Convent (XV cent.) which today is the "Luigi Russo" Library and Cultural Centre; in the cloisters, interesting frescoes are exhibited.

Unusual, is also the bell tower in red brick, built at the end of 1500; visible all around too are the old city walls. In the square there is also the Clock Tower (XVI cent.) and the Statue of Leopoldo II Grand Duke of Tuscany.

In the town centre, along the old streets, are the typical marble studios, important points of reference for many artists. ... from “Touring Around Versilia” (Versilia, Toscana, Italia)
