Itineraries in Chianti

Only a few places in the world offer so rich and picturesque landscapes like the Chianti region: gentle hills covered with forests and cypresses, cultivated fields alternating with vineyards and olive groves, and old peasant houses, parish churches, medieval castles and ancient hamlets that tells the story of the region. Many are the itineraries you can follow if you want to explore the Chianti region, whether on foot, along the country paths leading to charming farms, or by car, along the winding roads that run across the whole area between Florence and Siena

You can begin your tour of the Chianti region following one of the two main roads: the via Cassia, the road that pilgrims coming from northern Europe took to go to Rome, or the via Chiantigiana, which runs across the agricultural area. The first itinerary is a succession of parish churches, abbeys and hamlets, whereas the second one will give you the opportunity to get acquainted with the agricultural world. Whichever you choose, you will be surrounded by spectacular and unforgettable landscapes. Countless are the detours you can make if you want to reach a castle or one of the many Chianti farmhouses that stand on the hills.

The first stop of your tour of the Chianti region along the via Cassia could be the Certosa del Galluzzo, south of Florence; then, you could continue your tour visiting San Casciano, Tavarnelle and Barberino.

As soon as you take the via Chiantigiana , you will be surrounded by a rural landscape, the one of the so-called Chianti Classico area: the small towns of Gaiole, Radda, Castellina and Greve lie on hills covered with vineyards and olive groves. Renting a farmhouse or an apartment in one of these towns or in the surrounding countryside is certainly an excellent way to get acquainted with the Chianti region.
