It is the most famous leaning tower in the world!

As is to be read on one of the over 30,000 blocks of white marble that compose it, its construction began in 1173; the works ended only two centuries later, in 1350, when seven bells were hoisted onto its top. Pisa Leaning Tower is in fact the bell tower of the adjacent Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Saint Mary of the Assumption).

Its "distinguishing mark", that is, its manifest inclination, developed shortly after the beginning of the construction works: the soil on which the tower was built is mainly made of sand, clay, stones and debris and began to subside before the third floor was completed.

The Tower reached its maximum inclination in the late 20th century, and between 1990 and 2001 was closed in order to complete some important works aiming at bringing the inclination back to the one registered between the 18th and 19th centuries.

So, if you are spending some weeks in a holiday villa in Tuscany, visiting Piazza dei Miracoli is a must.

After having admired (and photographed) its 60 metres of absolute beauty... you could climb the 293 steps of the cockle-stair inside the Tower and reach the place where Galileo Galilei did some of his experiments.
