Historic Palaces

After having visited Casa Vasari, which is described in details in the previous chapter of this tourist guide, what other historic palaces are there to see in Arezzo?

Well, Casa Petrarca (Petrarch`s house) - the house of another famous artist native of Arezzo - is certainly worth a visit.

According to tradition, Petrarch was born right in this building situated in Vicolo dell`Orto 28 (for more information read the chapter of this tourist guide dedicated to the author of the "Canzoniere").

Right next to Casa Petrarca stands Palazzo Pretorio, whose façade along Via dei Pileati is decorated with the coats of arm of the families that governed Arezzo in the past. Nowadays, the building erected between the 14th and 15th centuries on a pre-existing 13th-century building hosts Arezzo library. If you want, you can rest or take some pictures with a tripod in the small garden in front of it.

Still in upper Arezzo, in Piazza della Libertà, stands the 14th-century Palazzo dei Priori, whose tower is visible from any part of the town. Arezzo`s town hall houses several works of art, including the frescoes by Parri di Spinello and Alessandro Forzori that decorate the "Sala del Consiglio", which can be visited upon request.

Before walking back to your apartment or holiday villa in Arezzo after having strolled along the streets and in the squares of the town, you should visit the Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici. Situated in Piazza Grande, it is a mix of gothic (lower half) and Renaissance (upper half) style. Particularly beautiful is the clock that decorates the bell tower.
