Caprese Michelangelo is a small town situated about 40 kilometres from Arezzo in Tuscan Valtiberina.
There, on March 6, 1475 was born the most important Renaissance sculptor and painter: Michelangelo Buonarroti.
The son of Ludovico di Leonardo Buonarroti Simoni, "podestà" of Caprese, and Francesca di Neri, Michelangelo manifested his love for art as a child. His father, then, abandoned his dream of seeing his son follow his political career and consented that he worked Domenico and Davide Ghirlandaio`s workshop in Florence
Not even a year after his arrival in Florence the doors of the Giardino delle Sculture (or of San Marco) opened up to him. The "Giardino" was a place rich in sculptures and archaeological findings where young artists could carry on their studies. It is right in this period that he established a close relationship with the Medici family.
Thanks to his artistic skills, as well as due to the political climate - between late 15th and the first half of the 16th century Italy was the theatre of the so-called Italian Wars - Michelangelo lived in Bologna, Venice and, in various periods, in Rome and Florence
Among his most important works are: the statue of "David" (1501-1504), the "Last Judgment" and the Sistine Chapel ceiling (1536-1541 and 1508-1512, respectively) and the Vatican "Pietà" (1497-1499).
