Florence is divided into five districts: District 1, including the historic centre; District 2, or Campo di Marte (north-east); District 3, or Gavinana Galluzzo (south-east); District 4, or Isolotto and Legnaia (west); and District 5, or Rifredi (north-west).

District 2 has a particular history.

The district of Campo di Marte was created in the early 19th century, right after the French occupation and the subsequent Restoration. As can be easily infered from the name of the area, this is the part of Florence in which the new Tuscan army drilled. Then, in the 1930s it was transformed into Florence sports district.

Among the apartments and the villas situated in this corner of Florence you will therefore see the tower of the "Artemio Franchi" stadium, which was designed by architect Pier Luigi Nervi and inaugurated in 1931. Here plays Fiorentina, Florence football team.
Opposite the "Franchi" is "Luigi Ridolfi" stadium, where are held national and international track-and-field meetings.
Then there is the sports palace dedicated to Nelson Mandela, which hosts matches of basketball and volleyball, concerts and other events. Last but not least, "Paolo Costoli" swimming pool is the favourite destination for those Florentines and tourists who stay in town during the summer. In Campo di Marte there are also public gardens, the so-called "campini", that is, Fiorentina training fields, and much more.
