If the Italians are a people of saints, poets and sailors... the same can be said of the Sieneses!
There are no sailors, but that is just because the town of the Palio is not by the sea. But Siena is rich in saints and, especially, in poets.

Beginning with Saint Catherine of Siena (1347 - 1380), the patron saint of Italy and one of the patron saints of Europe, who was born in the contrada of Oca (goose), and the poet Cecco Angiolieri (c. 1260 - c. 1312).

The list of celebrities born in or linked to Siena is really long, and should you have the opportunity to spend your holidays in Tuscany, possibly in a farmhouse or in a villa in Siena , you will certainly hear interesting stories about more or less renowned figures.
Such as, for example, Pia de` Tolomei, the main character of a musical by the singer Gianna Nannini, another real Sienese personality.

But Siena is not only a town of artists.
Alessandro Nannini, Gianna`s brother, has been a prized Formula 1 pilot who won the Grand Prix of Japan in 1989.
Then there is Trecciolino, whose real name is Luigi Bruschelli, a jockey who from 1998 to 2005 won the Palio either in July or in August and in 2005, with the horse Berio, won both races for the contrade of Bruco (caterpillar) and Torre (tower).
