Itinerary Terzo di Camollia

Siena composes of the Terzi di Camollia, di Città and di San Martino. Each Terzo encompasses some of the seventeen contrade.

Terzo di Camollia
In the last few years trekking has come into fashion among tourists.

If you have rented a farmhouse or a villa in the Tuscan countryside , hills, white roads, vineyards and sunflowers will be the natural background of your walks. But if you have decided to spend your holidays in Siena in a villa or in a farmhouse in the outskirts, you could trek in the various Terzi into which the town is divided.

In the northern part of Siena the Terzo di Camollia is divided into the contrade of Istrice, Lupa, Drago, Bruco, Giraffa and Oca.

It owes its particular name to Porta Camollia, one of the gates that open in the city walls, which stands in the place where settled Camulio, whom, according to the legend, Romulus asked to take his nephews Senius and Ascanius back to Rome.

What are the main sights in this part of the town?
You can begin your tour with the Fortezza Medicea (which hosts the headquarters of the Enoteca Italiana), then go to the Artemio Franchi stadium (where the local football team plays its matches) and eventually visit the house of Saint Catherine of Siena, which has now been transformed into a sanctuary, and the Rocca Salimbeni (that hosts the headquarters of Monte dei Paschi di Siena the most ancient bank in the world).
