Villas in Florence: Villa Corsini in Castello

Villa Corsini is located in Castello, north of Florence, in an area that in the 15th century belonged to the Strozzi family. When Palla Strozzi was exiled due to his opposition to Cosimo the Elder, the villa and the surrounding land were sold to the Rinieri family.

The new owners commissioned to Tribolo, the architect that some years after realized the gardens of the Medicean villa in Castello and of Boboli, the renovation of the building and of the garden. The architect planned an Italian garden, of which today only a statue representing the personification of the source of a river can be admired, which in the past was part of a fountain.

The villa underwent several transfers of property until in 1697 Lucrezia Rinuccini, Filippo Corsini`s wife, bought it. The Corsini family commissioned to Giovan Battista Foggini the renovation of the building. The architect renovated the façade, redecorated the internal courtyard and built a private chapel dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian.

The Superintendency of cultural heritage bought the villa at the end of World War II and at present some important sculpture collections coming from Florence Archaeological Museum are exposed here.
