Villas in Florence: Villa Poggio Torselli in San Casciano Val di Pesa
According to the documents of the first Florentine cadastre, Villa Poggio Torselli existed already at that time and bore its present name. At that time the villa belonged to the Machiavelli family.
In the course of the centuries, the villa has undergone several transfers of property: from the Angiolini to the Corsini, the Macalli, the Capponi and the Antinori families.
In 1702, the Orlandini del Beccuto family, the new owners, commissioned architect Lorenzo Merlini to renovate the villa, which was then transformed into the building that can still be admired in present days.
A wide garden surrounds the villa, where in the past Pope Pius VII stayed during his journey to France to attend Napoleon`s crowning ceremony. Originally a 17th-century Italian garden, in the 19th century it was then transformed into an English garden, to match the taste of that time.
