Villas in Florence: Villa Rucellai in Campi Bisenzio
Villa Rucellai stands in the centre of Campi Bisenzio. Also known as "Villa Il Pratello" due to the garden realized in the first half of the 16th century, the villa is the result of the transformation of 13th-century fortified building, which was probably the most ancient building in Campi Bisenzio.
The works aiming at uniting the two buildings belonging to two different branches of the Rucellai family, so as to form a single building, began in the first half of the 15th century and were finished around 1498. In 1512, Spanish troops plundered the villa.
In 1735 new restoration works began: on this occasion the northern wing was added.
Build and decorated according to the baroque style in vogue at that time, the new wing perfectly co-exists with the ancient part of the villa, characterized by a more austere style.
